Overview
Professor is a senior academic rank within Oakridge College, granted to faculty members who have demonstrated strong teaching ability, department service, academic leadership, and reliable contribution to the college’s academic life. This rank recognizes a faculty member who has become an established authority within their department and field of study.
A Professor holds greater standing than Associate Professor, Assistant Professor, Instructor, or Adjunct Faculty, but remains below Tenured Professor. The rank reflects substantial academic trust and department responsibility. Professors are expected to teach advanced courses, support students, contribute to curriculum development, assist with department planning, and provide guidance to less senior faculty when approved.
Within Oakridge College, a Professor may serve in any academic department. Their specific duties depend on their discipline, teaching area, and departmental role. They may teach intermediate or advanced courses, lead seminars, support research, guide creative or technical work, oversee student projects, contribute to department events, and support public-facing academic activity.
The rank carries authority, but it does not grant independent control over the department. Professors remain accountable to the Department Chair, Dean, Vice President, President, and college administration. They may advise, mentor, review, and influence department direction, but they do not override the approved academic hierarchy.
At its best, the Professor represents senior academic competence without the permanence of tenure. The rank recognizes a faculty member who has moved beyond basic teaching responsibility and become a meaningful contributor to the department’s standards, programs, students, and long-term academic life.
Responsibilities
Professors are expected to support the academic work of the department through teaching, student support, department service, mentorship, curriculum development, faculty review, academic leadership, and institutional participation. Their role is centered on strengthening the department’s academic identity and helping maintain its standards.
Core Responsibilities
- Teach approved courses within their department

Departmental Role
Within their department, Professors may support intermediate, advanced, and specialized coursework. They may help develop classes, guide department initiatives, mentor junior academics, participate in review processes, and support academic projects that strengthen the department’s identity.
They are expected to contribute to the stability and credibility of the department. However, they do not direct the department independently unless also serving as Department Chair, and they do not make final academic policy decisions outside the approved hierarchy.
Faculty Development
Professors may be asked to:
- Teach recurring, intermediate, advanced, or specialized courses

Institutional Expectation
A Professor should behave as a senior representative of Oakridge College’s academic community. They are expected to be reliable, organized, academically serious, and careful with the influence they have been given.
A Professor who neglects duties, mishandles students, undermines faculty review, ignores course expectations, misuses seniority, damages student work, oversteps department authority, or causes unnecessary conflict may face review, loss of assignments, administrative correction, or removal from leadership duties.
Requirements
The rank of Professor is granted to faculty members who have demonstrated strong teaching, reliable department service, academic leadership, mentorship, and continued institutional contribution. Promotion to Professor should be treated as a major faculty advancement within Oakridge College.

Contributions made to earn Associate Professor do not normally transfer toward promotion to Professor. Advancement should be based on new work completed while holding the Associate Professor rank, unless the Dean or college administration approves an exceptional appointment for an experienced candidate.
Promotion to Professor grants the faculty member senior academic standing within the department. It recognizes proven judgment, sustained contribution, and meaningful service to the college’s academic life.
Minimum Promotion Expectations
A candidate for Professor should be able to demonstrate:
- Strong teaching activity
- Reliable student support
- Continued department service

- Consistent professional conduct with students and faculty
- Ability to work with the Department Chair, Dean, Vice President, President, and senior faculty

- Advising the Department Chair on department standards or priorities when requested
- Helping shape the department’s public identity within Oakridge College

Promotion Review
Promotion to Professor should involve a formal promotion review panel, including:
- Department Chair
- Dean or appropriate college authority
- One senior faculty representative
- Two faculty reviewers at Associate Professor rank or higher
If there are not enough qualified reviewers available within the department, the Dean may approve qualified reviewers from another department.
Promotion should require a strong majority. A candidate should receive at least 4 out of 5 votes for approval.
Possible Outcomes
Approved: The candidate is promoted to Professor.
Delayed: The candidate must complete additional teaching, service, mentorship, academic leadership, or department contribution before promotion review continues.
Denied: The candidate remains Associate Professor and may reapply later.
Removed: A Professor may lose standing in serious cases involving misconduct, major inactivity, abuse of authority, repeated failure to meet expectations, or administrative decision.
Expectation of Professors
A Professor is expected to behave as a senior faculty member and trusted academic contributor. They should be active, reliable, professional, fair, and willing to support the department beyond their own assigned courses.
The rank carries prestige and influence, but not immunity. A Professor must strengthen the department’s academic standards, mentor others responsibly when approved, and use their seniority to support the college rather than claim authority they have not been granted.
Benefits
Professor is a senior academic rank within Oakridge College’s faculty hierarchy. The title gives a faculty member strong recognition, senior academic legitimacy, and meaningful influence within the department.
Core Benefits
- Recognition as a senior academic authority
- Greater academic standing than Associate Professor, Assistant Professor, Instructor, or Adjunct Faculty
- Permission to teach approved courses with significant independence
- Eligibility to develop workshops, lectures, academic projects, and department initiatives
- Increased involvement in department planning
- Opportunity to mentor Teaching Assistants and junior faculty when approved
- Stronger role in student academic development
- Eligibility to contribute to faculty review when permitted
- Greater visibility within Oakridge College
- Stronger consideration for Department Chair or other leadership opportunities
- Recognition as an established academic contributor within the department
- Eligibility to pursue future tenure review when qualified
Academic Influence
A Professor has strong academic influence. Their opinion may carry significant weight in matters involving courses, students, academic projects, faculty development, department planning, curriculum standards, promotion reviews, and areas of subject expertise.
They may recommend course ideas, support student advancement, raise concerns, contribute to department standards, and participate in review processes when approved. Their influence is strongest within their own department, though their reputation may carry weight across Oakridge College.
However, their influence remains subject to the Department Chair, Dean, Vice President, President, and college administration where those authorities apply. They may help shape the department, but they do not own it.
Professional Prestige
The rank of Professor marks major senior advancement within Oakridge’s academic hierarchy. Students may view a Professor as one of the department’s important authorities. Junior faculty may see them as a mentor, reviewer, rival, obstacle, patron, or example to follow. Senior faculty may treat them as an established colleague with serious academic weight.
For roleplay, this rank is useful because it creates meaningful authority without making the character untouchable. A Professor has enough standing to influence department life, mentor others, challenge weak ideas, support advancement, and participate in internal politics. At the same time, they remain below Tenured Professors and are still expected to prove continued reliability.
Institutional Standing
Professor carries strong institutional standing, but less protection than tenure. A Professor is not treated as temporary or junior, but they do not have the same permanence as a Tenured Professor.
This means the rank offers influence, credibility, and leadership potential while still leaving room for review, challenge, correction, or future advancement. Professors are expected to demonstrate the judgment and reliability needed for possible tenure consideration.
Limits
Professor is a senior faculty rank, but it is not absolute power.
They may face:
- Review by the Department Chair
- Review by the Dean or college administration
- Loss of assigned classes or projects
- Removal from review panels or leadership duties
- Conflict with other senior faculty
- Limited authority in final department decisions
- No automatic control over curriculum
- No authority to override the Department Chair
- No automatic tenure
- Administrative correction for misconduct or overstepping authority
In short: Professor is a senior academic rank at Oakridge College. It grants recognition, responsibility, prestige, and significant influence, but not unchecked authority or tenure protection. A Professor is trusted to teach, mentor, review, preserve standards, support academic development, and help shape department activity while remaining accountable to the department’s leadership and the wider college.
