A brief history
-
1830
The landing takes root
A small coastal landing and trading outpost is settled where the redwoods meet the salt water, decades before Hartwell ever arrives.
-
1857
The timber town
Elias Hartwell founds the Hartwell Timber Company, and the outpost grows into a mill town as the harbor carries the lumber out.
-
1858
A county bears his name
Hartwell County is formed - and the Hartwell County Sheriff's Department follows the next year - stamping Hartwell's name onto the region's law and government, not just its industry.
-
1911
The timber order ends
Elias Hartwell dies without an heir and the company comes apart under debt and decline, leaving the cut-over lowlands bare and the estate idle.
-
1918
A research institute rises on his land
The Oakridge Institute of Forestry and Land Sciences is founded on the former Hartwell estate to restore the damaged land - a forestry and land-recovery body, not yet a school.
-
1947
Oakridge becomes a college
The institute begins its transition into a broader academic institution - Oakridge College - as Theodore Crenshaw steps down and hands the presidency to Arthur Bellamy.
