The Oakridge campus keeps growing on the old Hartwell estate, and its students do their fieldwork on the hillsides the mill cut bare.
Oakridge College was accredited on July 1, 1947; from 1918 until then it was the Oakridge Institute of Forestry and Land Sciences, a forestry school the town's trust opened on the old Hartwell estate.
It trained foresters and surveyors for the timber country, and much of the teaching happened outdoors, often beside crews still logging the region. Field notes, boundary surveys and records from around the region piled up in the library, the start of what became a large local archive.
