| Circumstances of death | Eleanor Beatrice Whitcomb Ashton died peacefully at home following a prolonged period of declining health associated with age-related complications. |
Eleanor came to the Ashtons from Providence, Rhode Island — the same New England city the family had left for California two generations before — and married Ward Ashton, the young man Clarence Ashton's will had made keeper of the family name. As Ward's wife she stood at the head of the last Briarmont household to carry that name, and the mother of its last Briarmont-born children: Shaun, the eldest; Margaret Eleanor, whom the family called Meg; and Johnathan, the youngest. All three were born in the town in the years its long Ashton stewardship was quietly drawing to a close.
When Ward gave the Ashton Residence to Oakridge College in 1948 and moved the family to Oregon the year after, Eleanor went west with him into a quieter life. She outlived her husband by fifteen years and died at home in Corvallis in 1989, after a long decline.
