Raymond belonged to the second Ashton line — the branch descended from Caleb Ashton rather than from his brother Samuel — and was the son of Arther and Dorothea Ashton. Born in 1910, he came up entirely in the Oakridge era, in the quieter decades after the timber boom that had built the town's fortunes had passed.
Where the senior, Samuel line gave the family Residence to Oakridge College and moved west to Oregon, it was Raymond who carried the Caleb branch into the modern day. He married Evelyn Grace Thorne, and their son, Martin Avery Ashton, continued the line — down through Martin's own children to Clarence Ashton II, who would serve Briarmont as mayor. When the older branch left the town's record after 1949, it was Raymond's household that kept the Ashton name a living one in the town. He died in 1978.
