Arther Matthias Ashton was the son of Henry and Eliza Mae Ashton and the third-generation head of the Caleb branch — the working line of the family that grew up in the shadow of its more prominent Residence cousins. He came of age in the last decades of the Hartwell timber era and lived on well into the Oakridge college years, dying in 1952.
With his wife Dorothea, herself Hale-born, he had a son, Raymond, through whom the Caleb branch continued into the modern day — and, in time, to Clarence Ashton II among the town's later notables. Arther's long life bridged the two great chapters of Briarmont's history: the timber town of his boyhood and the college town of his old age. He carried the quieter half of the Ashton name across that change, and handed it on intact.
