Caleb Josiah Ashton, born in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1809, was the younger son of Erwin and Abigail and the head of the second Ashton branch — the line that came west alongside his brother Samuel's, but was never granted the standing the Residence branch enjoyed. He settled in Briarmont and lived out his life in the timber town, dying there in 1884. With his wife Martha, née Rusk, he raised a son, Henry, and through Henry the branch carried on — to Henry's son Arther, to Arther's son Raymond, and on down to the present day.
When his nephew Clarence built the Ashton Residence, its plans made no room for Caleb's household — an omission that fixed his branch at the family's margins and became one of the quieter points of interest in the house's story. The words remembered of him carry that distance without complaint: "Never wait at another Ashton's door."
