Catherine Sweely, born Catherine Hale, was a daughter of Alan and Gertrude Hale and one of the two sisters through whom the Hale line survived its own name. Born in 1849, she grew up on the founding homestead in the town's timber-boom years and in time married into the Sweely family, though the record does not preserve her husband's name. No children of hers are named in the town's account.
Catherine was the longest-lived of her generation of Hales, outliving her brother Anderson by half a century and dying in 1922, by which time the college era had begun and the old homestead was long past. With her passing, the last of Gertrude's daughters was gone, and the Hale name lived on only in the families its women had married into.
