Charlotte Hale, née Webster, was the matriarch of the founding Hale homestead and the wife of Jonas Hale. Hers was a settler household of Briarmont's first years, and like most women of that generation her work — the running of the home, the raising of children through a hard and uncertain time — went largely unrecorded. What the record does keep is her line. She was mother to Alan Hale, who inherited the homestead, and to Rebecca, whose marriage to Samuel Ashton first joined Hale blood to the Ashton family.
Widowed in 1837, Charlotte outlived Jonas by more than a quarter-century, dying in 1863 as the town was passing into its timber-boom years. Through her two children the quiet Hale name reached into the Ashton line, where it would carry on long after the Hales themselves had faded from the town's rolls.
