Henry Justus Ashton was the son of Caleb and Martha and the second-generation head of the Caleb branch — a man whose life spanned nearly the whole of the Hartwell timber era in Briarmont. With his wife Eliza Mae, born of the founding Hale family, he raised a son, Arther, continuing the line his father had brought west. Henry belonged to the working side of the Ashton name rather than the Residence branch that ran the timber company, and he outlived the boom that had defined the town, dying in 1918 as the Oakridge era was beginning.
Eliza Mae outlived him by eight years, dying in 1926. Through Arther the branch carried on past them both — to Arther's son Raymond and down to the present day — so that the quieter half of the Ashton name did not end with Henry's generation, but continued long after him.
