Martha Ashton

Martha Ellen Ashton, née Rusk, was the wife of Caleb Ashton and matriarch of the second Ashton branch through the years the family was putting down roots in the timber town of Briarmont. Little of her own life is recorded beyond the household she kept: with Caleb she raised their son Henry, who would carry the Caleb line forward, and she long outlived her husband.

Where the Residence branch held the family's public standing, Martha's household kept the quieter, working end of the Ashton name through the Hartwell era — the domestic steadiness on which a frontier family's continuity depended. She died in 1891, some years after Caleb, having seen the branch she anchored pass safely into the hands of the next generation.
