Doing quests

Quests give your character somewhere to start and something to chase. How to find, accept, and finish them.

Quests are guided threads. Some are starter paths for newcomers, others are ongoing storylines run by the community. They are the fastest way to meet people and find your footing.

Do it in the worldThis is the part that matters. Quests move when you touch the thing or walk into the place they point you at. Nothing advances from a panel.

Figure 01. How a quest actually runs. It is played in-world; the HUD only tells you where you are in it.

Note. Quests are played in the world, not in a menu. If you are waiting for something to happen on the HUD, you are waiting in the wrong place.

How a quest reaches you

You do not go shopping for quests. A quest becomes available when your character qualifies for it, and many start themselves and send you a notice when they do. What you qualify for depends on things like the groups you are in, whether you are on the student or civic path, your standing, and which quests you have already done.

That is also why two people standing next to each other can have different quests available. It is not a bug.

How a quest moves

By doing something in the world. A task tells you to go somewhere or touch something, and it fires when you do:

  • Touch it. Click the object the quest points you at, and the quest advances.
  • Walk into it. Some tasks fire simply because you arrived. Cross the threshold and it moves.
  • Join a group. A few tasks complete when you join the relevant community group.

Nothing on this list is a button on your HUD. The HUD tells you where you are; the world is where you play it.

If you get stuck

Open the activity tracker, the ! badge, and read the current objective again. You can reveal another hint from the same panel, and you can abandon a quest and pick it up later.

If a task will not fire, the usual cause is standing in roughly the right place rather than the exact one, or having already passed that step. A quest that seems to want another player usually does, so the answer is often Discord rather than the HUD.
