Briarmont is a made-up town, and the documents, agencies and broadcasts on this site are props written for a roleplay story, not real records, real policy, or advice you should act on.

Briarmont is fiction

Briarmont, California does not exist. Neither does Hartwell County, the county it sits in. There is no office you can walk into and no phone number that reaches anyone in it.

The platform is real and the people are real. Briarmont is a roleplay community that meets inside Second Life®, a virtual world run by Linden Research, Inc. The players are real people at real computers. The town they play in is invented.

So is everything in it. These are the names most likely to bring someone here from a search engine, and all of them are fictional:

Hartwell County Sheriff’s Department (HCSD), the sheriff’s department in the story. It is not a law enforcement agency. Nobody in it is acting as a peace officer, and it has no authority over anyone, anywhere.
Hartwell General Hospital, the story’s county hospital. It has treated no patients. Its staff list is a cast of characters, and nobody on it is practicing medicine here.
Oakridge College, the story’s college. It is not accredited and it grants no degrees. Its courses, transcripts and honors lists are part of the game.
KBRM, the town radio station in the story. It is not a licensed broadcast station and it transmits nothing.
Briarmont Township, the local government in the story. It passes no laws, collects no taxes, and issues no permit or record that means anything outside the game.

If a real agency, hospital, college or radio station happens to share a name with one of these, it has no connection to Briarmont. Search engines index these pages because the site is public, not because any of it is real. If you are trying to reach an actual sheriff, hospital, college or radio station, this is the wrong site. If you need real police, a real ambulance or any other emergency service, call your local emergency number. Nothing on this site reaches anyone who can help.

Real people play invented characters

The site publishes character information for around 200 characters in the citizen directory, including character names, portraits and roll numbers, and it publishes other in-story material about them elsewhere.

A roll number is an invented register number for a character. It is printed in a nine digit pattern because a record in the story would look like that, but it is not a Social Security number and it is not any other real identifier. It is tied to nobody’s real identity, it comes from no government, and it cannot be used to look anyone up anywhere.

All of that is story. Anything this site says about a character, including arrests, charges, disciplinary notes, grades, employment or reputation, is written for the roleplay. It is not a real record of anything, and it is not a statement about the real person playing that character.

The name behind a character is still a real person’s Second Life account name. If you want information about you removed or corrected, the Privacy Policy explains how that works and who to write to.

The handbooks are props

Briarmont publishes long documents written to look like genuine institutional records, because that is what makes the roleplay work. The three largest are:

the HCSD Standard Operating Procedures (192 pages)
the Briarmont Municipal Code (150 pages across 24 chapters)
the Hartwell General clinical staff manual

None of these is law. They are not the policy of any real government, agency, hospital or school. They are not legal advice, medical advice or law enforcement guidance, and nobody should rely on any of them for a real decision.

The Municipal Code

The Briarmont Municipal Code adapts text from the published California Codes. Copyright and DMCA explains where that text comes from and who holds what.

The adaptation does not state California law. Section numbers, penalties and wording were changed to suit a county that does not exist, and some local ordinances were invented outright. The real codes are amended over time, while this copy sits frozen wherever it was when we last edited it. For the actual law, read the official California source or ask a lawyer.

The clinical staff manual

The procedures in the Hartwell General clinical staff manual are simplified, and several of them are invented, so that scenes are quick to play and easy to follow. They do not describe how real medicine is practiced and no one should follow them. If you are having a real medical emergency, stop reading and call your local emergency number.

The bulletins are not real news

Briarmont publishes a town journal of bulletins, event write-ups and incident reports. It is laid out like a local news site, and it is meant to look like one. Members write it as part of the roleplay. What it reports happened in the story, and none of it happened in real life.

An arrest, a fire, a death, a court result or a scandal reported there is part of the story. No real arrest was made, no real fire burned, and nobody died. The person named is a character, and nothing written about that character says anything about the real person who plays them.

The dispatch console is not a real-life scanner

The page at /township/dispatch/ is labeled “Live scanner feed” in the site header, and within the story that is what it is: it follows what Briarmont members are actually doing in Second Life as they play. What it is not is a real-life scanner. No real radio traffic is received, recorded or relayed, no real emergency service is listening, and nothing on it refers to a real incident, a real address or a real emergency call. If you have a real emergency, stop reading and call your local emergency number. Nobody sees this page who can help you.

Linden Research, Inc. trades as Linden Lab, and the other pages on this site use that name. Briarmont is an independent community run by Second Life residents. It is not operated, sponsored, endorsed or approved by Linden Research, Inc. Nothing published here is an official Linden Research statement, and Linden Research is not responsible for the community, this site, or anything that happens in either.

The naming license that lets us use “SL” in this site’s domain also holds this public website to a General content standard and to Second Life’s Community Standards. The Terms of Use lists what that rules out.

Other company names on this site

Discord, GitHub, YouTube, Google, Adobe and Linden Research are named on this site because the site or the community uses their services. Those names and logos belong to their owners. Naming a company does not mean it is involved with Briarmont or endorses it, and the same goes for any other product or brand name you find here.

Some of those companies also receive a request directly from your browser when you load certain pages here. The Privacy Policy says which ones, on which pages, and what they can see.

Availability

Briarmont is run by a small team. The site can be slow, out of date, broken or offline at any time, and features can change or disappear without notice. We make no uptime promise.

This website does not take payments. Briarmont does charge for things: land and homes are rented in Linden Dollars, and other paid services may follow. Those payments happen inside Second Life rather than here. The Terms of Use covers the arrangement and the Rental Covenant covers renting.

Accessibility

We want this site to be usable with a screen reader and usable with a keyboard alone. Most of the text on the site is in the HTML the server sends, so it can be read without JavaScript, though some interactive parts of the site do need it. The site is also built to a standing rule against horizontal scrolling, so you should not have to drag a page sideways to finish a sentence.

That is a commitment to effort, not a conformance claim. We have not audited the site against any accessibility standard and we do not assert that it meets one.
