HGH — Standard Operating Procedures

Hartwell General Hospital's public handbook — the teaching-hospital mission, the standards of care every patient can expect, and the medical roleplay standards every member of the hospital follows. Maintained by the hospital group leads.

303 - Emotes and Medical Realism

303.1 EMOTES

Medical roleplay should include descriptive emotes. Good examples:

  • Describing examinations.
  • Explaining equipment.
  • Showing preparation before procedures.
  • Displaying emotional responses.
  • Communicating with patients.

Avoid one-line roleplay whenever possible.

303.2 MEDICAL REALISM

While realism is encouraged, roleplay should remain enjoyable.

Staff should:

  • Use realistic terminology appropriate to their character's level.
  • Explain procedures.
  • Perform assessments before treatment.
  • Consider patient history.
  • Allow injuries to have consequences.

Avoid:

  • Instant cures.
  • Impossible recoveries.
  • Unrealistic medications.
  • Performing every specialty procedure without appropriate qualifications.

303.3 TEACHING DURING ROLEPLAY

Hartwell General is a teaching hospital, and teaching should become part of the roleplay whenever practical:

  • Explain procedures to students.
  • Demonstrate equipment.
  • Ask teaching questions.
  • Encourage participation.
  • Allow students to perform tasks under supervision.
