Every major at Oakridge belongs to one of five departments, and Majors and Programs lists which.
Arts
When a play goes up on campus, the cast, the lights and the set tend to come out of the same few Arts classrooms. The department teaches the crew trades that get a show onto a stage alongside work made to be looked at or listened to.
Humanities and Social Sciences
Students in Humanities and Social Sciences sit in on council meetings at Town Hall and work through the county clerk's records in the same building: the department studies how people live together and what they keep on record. A few of them write letters to the Courier.
Sciences
The land, the coastal waters and the laboratory belong to Sciences. Its field classes work the hillsides the mill cut bare, and its students go out from the harbor on the college's research vessels. What they bring back is worked over at lab benches on campus.
Health
Much of the Health department's teaching happens at Hartwell General Hospital, and some of it in patients' own homes. The department covers how people fall ill and get better, and how to look after them in the meantime.
Public Service and Careers
When court is in session at the courthouse, a few Public Service and Careers students are usually in the public seats with their notebooks open. It teaches the law and the everyday trades a town depends on.
Who runs the college
The President of Oakridge College is Neil Ostrander.
The Dean holds the one office under the President, takes academic questions and student conduct for the whole college, and stands in for the President.
The Athletic Director runs the Department of Athletics.
The faculty titles are Professor, for someone who teaches a course; Instructor, for a newer or part-time teacher; and Teaching Assistant, for a student who helps run a class. The faculty roster shows who holds which.
The offices a student deals with are the Registrar's office, Campus Security, Student Council and the Disciplinary Committee. Campus life is covered in the Oakridge College Student Handbook.
Out of character. Members hold the offices of Dean and Athletic Director and the faculty titles; the President is an NPC who appears in letters and notices. If you hold the office of Dean, you stand in for him in scenes. How you come to teach is in the Oakridge College Faculty Handbook.
