Overview
Alpha Chi Epsilon, or AXE, is a fraternity founded at Oakridge Institute of Forestry and Land Sciences in the winter of 1919 by three students who built it less as a social club than as a practical brotherhood. Formed during the harsh early years of the institute, AXE was born from labor, shared difficulty, and the understanding that survival often depended on who would hold steady beside you. Its symbols — the axe, the lantern, and the bowline — were not chosen for prestige, but for use, and only later became sacred to the house’s identity. To outsiders, AXE can appear restrained, even plain, but that plainness is deliberate. The fraternity values endurance over display, function over pomp, and loyalty proven in action rather than declared in words.

Alpha Chi Epsilon - AXE - is a fraternity founded at Oakridge Institute of Forestry and Land Sciences in the winter of 1919 by three students: Holt Briggs, Fen Calloway, and Ward Ashton. It didn't begin, like other groups, with a charter or a ceremony; instead, it began practically, with a rescue on a muddy bluff path in the rain.
The fraternity takes its name and its founding symbols from three objects that were present in that first winter before they became symbols: a felling axe, a lantern, and a length of mooring rope tied into a bowline. These are rendered on the crest as Pelekys, Lychnos, and Desmos.
History
The founding is documented in the fraternity's inner record, First Winter. The public account covers the Briarmont setting, the three founders, the season of storms, and the rescue. The full account, what the symbols mean, what was carved under the table, and what the motto cost to earn, is known only to initiated brothers.
ΑΧΕ was formally chartered at Oakridge in the spring of 1920, after the three founders spent the winter working out whether what they had done together was a singular event or the beginning of something repeatable. They decided it was repeatable. The charter was filed. The table was moved to the chapter house.
The fraternity has operated continuously at Oakridge College since its founding. It has never been large. It is not interested in size as a value.
Structure
ΑΧΕ does not have an elaborate hierarchy. The roles that exist are functional rather than for honorific pomp and ceremony.
The Chapter is the full body of initiated brothers. Decisions of substance are made here, collectively.
The Pledge programme is the period between taking the oath and full initiation. Pledges are told that the three letters stand for something. They learn what that something is after initiation, not before.
The Chapter keeper maintains the physical chapter house and its contents, including The Driftwood Table. This is considered one of the more significant roles, though it carries no formal authority.
