| Surveyors' Hall |
Surveyors' Hall is named for the surveyors trained at the Oakridge Institute of Forestry and Land Sciences between 1918 and 1947. Their crews mapped the slides on the cut-over slopes above Briarmont, traced the silted creek channels and ran property lines across Hartwell County. Their notebooks went into the library at Hartwell Manor, where the college archive keeps them.
Oakridge College built the hall in the 1950s, across the road from the manor, and Agnes Corliss, its first president, chose the name. She had studied beside those crews as one of the Institute's first women students.
It is the college's student center, and the cafeteria is there. A field class back from the hillsides leaves its sample bags in a pile by the door, and Student Council posts its notices in the hall.
