The Hartwell County Courier

The Hartwell County Courier

Hartwell County was five years old when the first issue of The Hartwell County Courier came out in 1877. The early paper paid its way by printing the new county's legal notices.

The first meeting of the Briarmont Improvement Club, in 1901, got two lines. In 1911 the paper printed the third clause of Elias Hartwell's will in full, with the notices of the company sale below it, and for the next seven years Adelaide Hartwell's letters against selling the estate shared its pages with the council's replies. Agnes Corliss's reports on the salmon creeks went in through the 1920s and 1930s, the names of the logging outfits included, and cost the paper advertising. When the Christmas flood of 1964 had gone down, it listed what the creek had carried off at its mouth, Earl Spurling's boat shop among it.

The tide table has run on the back page for longer than anyone at the paper can say, and the one week it was left out, the boat crews complained about it for a month.

An editor and a small staff put it out every week now, with the council meetings at Town Hall in Briarmont, the harbor, the college and the week's calls to the sheriff's department. Anyone can write a letter, and residents who know a subject sometimes write pieces for it: a report from the harbor, a review, an account of a meeting nobody else sat through.

Out of character. The Courier is NPC-run. Players can write letters or pieces for it in character and send them to staff on Discord; staff decide what runs.
