Getting started: your first day in Briarmont

Welcome. Briarmont is a roleplay community inside Second Life, and getting in takes less than you would think. This guide is the fast path. The deeper systems each have their own article linked at the end.

Make a Second Life avatarFree to create, and the viewer is the only thing you install.

Land at BriarmontThe Find Us in SL page drops you at the arrival point.

Wear the HUD and titlerBoth are at the arrival point, and both are expected in shared spaces.

Open Profile and make your characterTap Profile on the HUD, the person icon. It opens your Munibase dashboard in a browser, and you create the character there.

Watch for a questThe ! badge lights the moment your character qualifies for one, and the Available list behind it is where you accept. The Oakridge admissions walk is the first one open.

Say helloIntroduce yourself in Discord, then walk into a scene.

Note. You do not need a finished backstory to arrive. Most residents work out who their character is by playing them.

What to do first

Find a place to be. Windjammers and Big Jim's Diner are the easiest rooms to walk into cold, because there is usually someone already in them and nobody expects an introduction. Claim a spot on the public character roll so people can find you. If a quest turns up for your character, follow it: the ones your character is eligible for are listed under Available in the HUD's activity tracker, ready to accept, and they are the easiest way to be given somewhere to be.

Link your Discord

Linking ties your character to your Discord account. It is optional, and it is what earns the green check on the character's file. You need it to take part in the community Discord, and you only do it once: linking one character links every character on the same Second Life account.

Make your character firstThere is nothing to link until a character exists. Tap Profile on the HUD, the person icon, and create it on the dashboard that opens.

Join the Briarmont DiscordUse the invite link, then open the #discord-linking channel and read what it tells you there.

Open your character dashboard firstThe code you are about to ask for expires, so have the dashboard open and the right character selected before you start. On the HUD, tap Profile, then Dashboard.

In Discord, press the pinned Link Discord buttonIt asks you for one thing: your character's name, spelled exactly as it appears on the file. The slip has a Copy character name button so you do not have to retype it.

Discord sends you a one-time codeOnly you can see it. If it runs out before you get to it, press the button again for a fresh one.

Type the code in and press EndorseBack on your character's file, the endorsement slip has a box for it. When it goes through, the slip reads Endorsed and shows the Discord account it is linked to.

The order is the part people get wrong. The code Discord hands you expires, so open your character dashboard and select the right character before you ask for one, not after.

If it does not go through. It is almost always one of two things: the character name spelled differently from the way it sits on the file, or a code that ran out before it was used. The slip has a Copy character name button so the spelling never has to be the problem, and you can press the pinned button again for a fresh code. Ask on Discord if neither of those fixes it.
